An Abstract Of My Childhood: Passing Notes

I realized my childhood was actually fun-filled, so I decided to start a so-called chain of stories about some memorable extracts of my childhood in a series of blog posts. This is the first post, so let’s begin 🙂

I went to Pei Hwa Presbyterian Primary School ( I know that’s a long name ) and like most other primary schools, we have morning and afternoon sessions. Primary 1-2 afternoon, the rest morning session.
When I was in P3, I was excited about being in the morning session because I felt this strong sense that I’ve already grown up ( but of course I haven’t then ) and I was extremely proud because back then morning session classes would share classrooms with afternoon session classes, and I remember in P3 my class shared classrooms with this primary 1 class, and my class was the older ( not to mention smarter ) class. Which also goes to say, the desk I use in the morning session is used by somebody else in the afternoon session.
I was excited to meet the person who shared the same desk as me, and so was my best friend then. My best friend then was a boy ( just goes to show a girl and a boy can be best friends ) but there was tiny problem. We weren’t allowed to stay back after school hours to loiter around the corridors of classrooms to see who was the person who shared the same desk as me. So we came up with a plan.
We would hide in the toilet until their recess time before sneaking into our classroom. But the thing was, we wanted to see his face but if we snuck in at recess he wouldn’t be in the classroom then. But that was the best our brains could think, so we rotated shifts. On alternate days, we would stay back and camp in the toilet until their recess time before sneaking to the classroom to scrutinize his stuff. It went on for about a week or so. From what my memory still recalls ( it has been 5 years ) he had a blue bag, and his handwriting was super big ( well okay all primary one kids have gigantic handwriting ). So one fine day while my best friend was doing his “shift”, he was unfortunately, caught.
Apparently while he was sneaking inside our classroom, a teacher happened to walk past and spot him in the classroom with the lights off. Primary school teachers always like to overreact, and she presumed my best friend was a thief and so he was caught. But luckily he was smart and he explained to her that he was in the morning session and he shared this classroom with the primary 1 class and he had come to collect something he accidentally left behind, and from his pants pocket he retrieved a pen. The teacher eyed him suspiciously but eventually she left him alone. He breathed a sigh of relief.

From then on, the after-school stalking activity stopped because we couldn’t afford to get into any more trouble or we’ll probably get our ass kicked by the principal.

And so we came up with another plan. Primary school students are so enthusiastic in their plans.
We decided to leave notes under the table, and hope that the cleaner doesn’t remove it before the afternoon session boy sees it. Hopefully he would reply to us.

So we got down to action. Paper and pen and a bright heart was all we needed. And so our first note was done. It went something like this :
Dear whosoever who sits at this desk:
I am your morning session senior, curious to know who you are.
What’s your name? How do you look like?
-Senior

School was dismissed, and my best friend and I deliberately lingered longer until the rest of the class had gone before we placed our note carefully under the desk.

The next day we didn’t get any reply, but the note was gone. Our hearts sank.
But we got our hopes high again and we wrote another note.

The second day, we were elated because there under my desk was a note.
We opened it with shaking fingers.
To: P3 senior
My name is Tommy. I am a boy.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was like seeing light after days of darkness. From then on we started writing notes everyday, until finally one day we did something overboard. I took my pair of scissors out and wrote on the scissors, P1 do not touch.

The second day Tommy left his pair of scissors there on my desk and wrote back to me P3 do not touch. And uh my form teacher happened to see the pair of scissors.

She called me and my best friend to see her, and we told her about our attempts to get to know our junior better. Of course, we were told off terribly for nosing into other people’s business and we were punished quite severely because we were made to stay back during recess time. Staying back during recess time back then was a big thing. Only bad kids would stay back during recess. My best friend and I were bad kids for that day.

Since then on, we stopped the whole thing about getting to know Tommy. In fact, his name was the only thing we got to know until today. But of course I don’t think he remembers us anyway.

Once in P5 I think I saw Tommy’s name on the notice board for I forgot what, and everything would flood back. Unfortunately at the end of P3, I lost my best friend because he got into the GEP stream and since then left Peihwa and left me.

But our memories will always be shared, especially our long phone calls discussing our very very retarded plans, thinking about it now. His name is Kho Wen Hao, I don’t know which school he’s in now. I can’t even remember which GEP primary school he transferred to after he left Peihwa, I think it was Henry Park, I can’t remember.

In the next post: Something between Tei Zhang Wei of 2L and I

12-14/11 Memorable TL Camp @ Sarimbun Scouts Camp

I know I’ve been neglecting my blog for quite a while. Forgive me.
For the past two days I’ve been at camp, team leadership camp to be exact. It was held at.. Well read the title, located somewhere in Lim Chu Kang around the cemeteries and super ulu.

I was posted to group 1C, which consisted of 11 girls and 1 lucky guy. Apparently I’m the only year 2 there so… There were 3 year 1s and the rest were year 3s. The yellow camp tee was too big for me.

Let’s just say that the weather is always teasing us. When it’s not scorching hot, it’s pouring. And when it’s drizzling, it suddenly stops and drizzles again. When can the weather stop treating us like babies? Oh I got a pretty good suntan, sexier than ever after returning home. Now my arms are like white and brown. There are a damn hell lot of mosquitoes there.

First day:
Reached the campsite at around 8.30(?) and then had some icebreaker games, then got to know all the members in the group. Our bunk was yellow 2, which was just basically a yellow house. The bunk had nothing inside except a double decker bed. Wait you can’t even call it a bed, because there were no mattresses. You can call it a platform to put your sleeping bags on though.
And so we played MRT, Elope, tic-tac-toe, H2O and other games. We also did a lot of cheers. When we aren’t sleeping/having a briefing/eating/walking from place to place, we are cheering. Nothing to do, cheer. Shitting, cheer. Just a hell lot of cheering the same old cheers over and over again. Our facil for 1C is Shao Hao from 5M (if my memory hasn’t failed me).

Lunch actually wasn’t as bad as how they described it. It wasn’t lukewarm and merely edible, it was actually quite nice. The milo there is better than the milo you drink at hawker centers.
But apparently during the first lunch Ms Hannah Tan scolded us like crazy because we didn’t make her feel like she existed. But nevermind our moods weren’t dampened by a severe scolding. Singaporeans have extremely thick skins.

Basically the first day was just ice-breaking and we played a lot of games. There was a huge yellow see-saw and our whole group stood on the see-saw, trying to balance it. Many at times it would suddenly tilt to one side and all of us would scream on it, but finally we did manage to balance it.

There was a night trail the first night, basically treasure hunting at night. The facils were kind enough to scare the shit out of us with some nice ghost stories about the campsite before we set off. And there were facils that painted their face rather prettily with white paint and other paints hiding in the bushes outside to pounce on us when we walked past. I admit I’ve always been scared of these things, and for the rest of the night trail I clung on to Jocelyn like a monkey and even though I knew that the ‘ghosts’ were merely seniors with face painted, but I still stayed away anyway. Better safe than sorry just kidding I’m just a chicken-witted person just kidding I’m just scared of these out-of-this-planet things. So thank you Jocelyn for being my soft toy to comfort me when I pee in my pants during the night trail. I salute your bravery.

District 1 was first for wash-up, so my bunk sneaked to the dorm toilets to wash up. Little did we know, we weren’t allowed to shower there. But since we were already naked in the toilets, there was little the exasperated facilitator could do outside the toilet apart from hastening us to faster finish showering.

I love their supper. Milo and a piece of bread. Simply awesome.

The first night was pretty much a restless night because 4 people squeezing on one wooden plank, the feeling is not good. Especially when whichever direction you turn, you’re facing someone hot.

2nd day:
We woke up at 6.30 and then went to brush up. Everyone basically woke up at the same time because when one moves, the entire hut shakes and makes an earthquake so subsequently everyone else will wake up. When we walked out of our huts to brush teeth, we saw approximately 30 humans walking like zombies to the toilet. Some walked into the opposite sex toilet out of confusion.

Breakfast was fried rice with milo. Every single time before a meal, we have to do a cheer. And the people who serve the food always give super little unless you ask for more. Okay maybe it’s just because I have a gigantic appetite, but everytime I find myself asking Eh can a bit more a bit more ya ya ok thanks to them and sometimes I get this O.o look as if trying to say eh brother your appetite sibei big leh yes brother my appetite is big because I am muscle all over. Just stating facts.

After that we went to different locations to play our separate station games, then we gathered at the field. It was scorching hot, and our skins were all shedding under the heat. See, humans moult too.
Under severe circumstances, that is.

We were all happily suntanning under the 40 degree Celsius sun, when it was reporting attendance time and then something very serious happened. Rizhao of 3A has gone missing. “Who knows how he looks like? You’ve lost a group member! I think we need to call the police *sob* Whatever I do I swear upon my life I will find him.” The facils went bonkers. But in the end it was all a ‘test’ from the teachers. Rizhao was simply taken away to the Ops room drinking coffee, pretending to be a hostage all this while. We were terribly trolled, to think we spent 30 minutes trying to find him in the deep grass.

Our afternoon games were ruined due to the rain. The weather is always PMS-ing on us. There isn’t a single day where it didn’t rain today. Stupid dumb crap. But we went to the canteen and played indoor games instead, such as Where’s the peanut and then we did mass dance. Tarzan. The last time I danced that thing was nearly 2 years ago at my year 1 orientation. The only part I remembered was the OY OY OY OY OY OY OY when everyone will jump like maniacs and punch the air above. But then gradually it came back to me and it went pretty well in fact.

At night we made a huge campfire, the first campfire I’ve ever seen in my life because I missed the campfire in P5 camp. It actually wasn’t as big and grand as I imagined, but it was quite cool because it illuminated the entire night sky which was already pitch dark at 7.20. Mosquitoes come out at night, and I was bitten like shit at the ending of the day. The mosquito actually found its way to my butt.

When it was almost time to sleep, we had another gathering. The boys were dismissed, but the girls were held back. To be honest, the moment the teacher said BOYS YOU CAN GO, GIRLS, STAY. I knew it had something to do with the toilets. What else can it be. Girls and toilets, it all made sense. I showered outside with my clothes on, then went inside a cubicle to wear my clothes only. This is called efficient bathing.
Anyway the whole of the girls went to the toilet to take a ‘tour’ and apparently all the toilets were clogged with toilet paper and somebody pasted their used sanitary pad on the wall. Yes, your period is so beautiful you just gotta display your blood huh.
In the end, we found ourselves cleaning the freshest-smelling place at 12am. Finally, we were released at 12.45 and everyone fell into a deep sleep that night.

3rd day:
We were all awoken by Fangqin who was screaming “EH 1C IF YOU WANT WAKE UP EARLIER WAKE UP NOW AH NOW 6.45 ALREADY” We rubbed our eyes.
So apparently according to Jocelyn in the middle of the night me and Lijing suddenly decided to sandwich her at the same time so she had to resort to pushing both of us away. That’s just electricity. I bet we were like, 1,2,3 ORANGE!!! then we started squeezing her.

Third day was pretty much area cleaning, and wrap webs where everyone holds this string and passes it to whoever who gets thanked about what they’ve done that’s deserving a thank you.

Then we got our pink facilitator tees 💜💜💜💜 the material is like a polo tee and it’s very comfortable. The best part is, IT FITS ME. Although the yellow camp tee fits too if I tucked in and pulled some material out so it wouldn’t look too toot, the pink tee is way better.

We were showed a video about these 3 days, and then we heard Miley Cyrus’ The Climb.

John Huang and Mr DLC came up and spoke something, then we were dismissed back to our bunks and then we were dismissed from there.

We exchanged numbers, and by the time the bus reached RV, the teacher said You are dismissed from here, goodbye! I actually felt like crying but whatever I held it inside.

Before I end this post, I just wanna leave my own heartfelt feelings here:
Dearest 1C
When I came to this camp I knew none of you and that was really crappy because I thought I was forever alone, but soon the ice breaker games already drew us closer. Then, at the first night, we were already somewhat together and quite close already.
Although it was a mere 2 days, I feel that it’s much more than what it is. You know, that indescribable feeling inside you whenever a camp ends, especially when there’s so much bonding.
And I wanna thank our facil, Shao Hao for being such a handsome facil ( and of course nice ) for drawing us together and being with us through these few days.
Goodbyes are always hard, but I hope that when we see each other around in school again, we will remember each other’s faces and say hi, because I hope that we don’t ever forget this camp we had together.
I want all of you to know, it is my honor being in this group, and thank you everyone for making this group a place that felt like home to me. Love you 💙

Walao so dramatic already.

There’s always gonna be another mountain, I’m always gonna wanna make it move. Always gonna be an uphill battle, sometimes I’m gonna have to lose 💜
